Chapel of São Sebastião, Ericeira

The Chapel of São Sebastião (St. Sebastian) dates back to the 15th/16th centuries, and is located in the northern part of the town of Ericeira, next to the beaches of Algodio and São Sebastião.

Capela de S. Sebastião

The monument’s current architecture exhibits different elements coming from different periods. Such is the case with the altar – which must have been installed inside it in 1567, at the request of a group of residents of Ericeira – and the azulejo tiles from the 17th century that cover the chapel’s interior. The space underwent extension in 1678.

The confraternity of S. Sebastião, made up exclusively by unmarried male youth, has its seat in the chapel. This is where the tombs of this group were situated until 1968, at which point they were transferred to Misericórdia, together with those present in the Parish Church.

For several years, at the end of January, Festivities have been organised next to the chapel in honour of S. Sebastião and S. Vicente, at times the largest celebration in the town and its surrounding areas. These days, the festivities are also known as the Festa dos Bêbados or Feast of the Drunks. After the celebration of the mass, the people of Ericeira (and visitors) get together on the Church street to dance to the sound of popular music, eat regional cakes and drink a glass of red wine served from the barrels offered for the event.
